About ALEX MORTENSEN
I had been framing for my wife, Ekaterina Mortensen, and then at the start of 2008 decided I should do some paintings to put in the frames myself. Having told Katya for years that if ever I paint I would paint with a large brush on large canvases, I started with small ones - miniatures. My earliest miniatures picked up a Highly Commended in the Royal National Canberra Art Show in 2008, followed by a Second Prize (miniatures) in 2009.
I have had works hanging at The Artists Shed in Queanbeyan, the TAP Gallery in Darlinghurst, Sydney - including a joint exhibition with my wife - and the Rotary Camberwell Exhibition in Melbourne, Royal Canberra Show, Sydney Royal (Art Section), Gallery on Track in Goulburn.
I do a variety of works - miniatures to larger ones; and use various media - oils, watercolours, acrylics and charcoal.
My 3 dimensional work, "My Thoughts Set in Concrete" was accepted for exhibition in the Goulburn Regional Art Prize in 2010.
In 2009, I commenced studying a Fine Arts B.A. course through Open University, Curtin University in Perth, W.A. I have gained one Distinction and eight High Distinctions in the units studied but will probably not finish the degree.
